what is the diff between crossover and straight through?

i want to ftp my xbox (nothing ilegal just to upgrade hdd) but i dont want to buy the hdd if i cant figure out how to ftp. i have flashfxp but i dont know if i have a crossover cable or straight through. how can i tell the diff. help. also what other legal things can i do when i ftp my xbox.

Most ethernet cables are straight through, since the cross-over function is performed by the router.
A cross-over cable has the receiver and transmitter cables crossed at the two ends. You need a crossover cable only if you don’t connect the xbox through a router (directly from your PC).
